Describe your role to someone who is not familiar with the construction industry or Colas USA.
In my role, I perform accounting duties for the liquid asphalt terminal and quarries at Delta Companies Inc. My main responsibilities include reconciling inventory balances, processing customer tickets, and preparing various financial reports.
What has been your favorite project so far?
One of my favorite projects was creating an online form for our quarries to submit voided tickets for approval. It sounds simple but involved quite a bit of coding for the approval process to work properly. This online form has helped reduce paperwork and save time for all involved. I enjoyed working with the scale clerks, managers, and the rest of the accounting team to determine how to make this process as easy as possible.
What drew you to working within the construction industry?
I was not familiar with the construction industry prior to starting this job and was excited to learn something new. Now that I have worked here for a few years, one of my favorite things is visiting a jobsite or plant to see the work in action. It is such a cool feeling to drive on a road we paved or watch a dump truck unload rock from our quarry knowing all the work that was involved in making that happen.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work every day?
I enjoy collaborating with my teammates. They all bring something different to the table, and I have learned a great deal from each of them. I also love finding ways to improve processes and make them more efficient, whether it be finding an easier way for employees in the field to report data or building a spreadsheet that automates a process for the accounting team.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I have four children who are age 6 years and under. Juggling being a mom and having a full-time job is challenging, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
From her nomination:
“Laura is thoughtful of others. She often sees other points of view and thinks about how others feel in situations. When I have thought someone should have turned something in or been nicer, she will share possible items on that person’s plate that would cause the situation to unfold the way it did. Laura also participates in items outside her normal responsibilities, such as Touch-a-Truck and Corporate Games. She has a positive outlook.”
