“Alyssa will never ask you to do something she is not willing to do herself. She encourages you to ask the right questions and teaches you to become a problem solver. Alyssa works exceptionally hard and gets a ridiculous amount of work completed on any given day. She sets the bar for other employees to look up to in terms of work ethic. Alyssa will get the job done no matter what it takes. She is also always respectful, efficient and correct.”
Alyssa Wetzsteon is the Regional Controller at QAP, which is a part of Colaska, Inc., the Colas USA subsidiary that operates throughout Alaska. Alyssa has been a part of the Colas USA Family since 2011. She started as a Staff Accountant at Colaska, right out of college in 2011. In 2012, she transferred to Secon – another Colaska company – as Assistant Controller and in 2014 transferred to QAP where she has worked ever since.

Describe your role to someone who is not familiar with the construction industry or Colas USA.
I oversee the accounting team for my region and control all financial-related information. I also work closely with manufacturing and construction operations to provide information that helps them make decisions.
What has been your favorite project so far?
While my job isn’t really project-specific, my favorite part has been learning from our operations teams and getting opportunities to visit the field.
What drew you to working within the construction industry?
Many of my classmates went into public accounting after graduation, and I knew I didn’t want to follow that same route. Construction and manufacturing accounting is much more interesting and dynamic in my opinion, and there can be so much variety depending on what projects we have.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work every day?
The people I work with are what motivates me every day, and the pride of working at a company that builds exciting and complex projects so integral to the infrastructure across Alaska.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I was born and raised in Montana and grew up on a cattle ranch that’s been in my family since 1889.
What is one recommendation you could make to help Colas USA operate better?
The sharing of each region’s best practices, both financial and operational, could open lines of communication and strengthen the collective knowledge base across Colas USA.
