April worked very well with our local management teams, providing valuable analysis and advice. She has been praised, by both the local leadership team and by the accounting team that felt supported and empowered by her. April’s leadership skills and in depth knowledge of our systems made the transitions with our newly hired Controllers smooth. She has been a great leader by example and always has a great demeanor and takes on new duties/assignments with enthusiasm.
April Coufal is the Regional Controller at Simon, the Colas USA subsidiary that operates throughout Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado.
Since joining the Colas USA Family in 2015, April has held the titles of Construction Controller and Regional Controller.

Describe your role to someone who is not familiar with the construction industry or Colas USA.
My role is to manage the accounting team for my region, control processes and procedures, and produce financial statements. I also work close with operations to provide them the financial insight they need to manage their operation.
What has been your favorite project so far?
My favorite project so far has been developing budget spreadsheets and tools.
What drew you to working within the construction industry?
I was drawn to the construction industry because I love working with people who have the same goal, and the construction industry is a hard-working industry. It is nice to work with people who have the same work ethic as you.
What motivates you to wake up and go to work every day?
I love learning as much as I can about the software and accounting aspects so that I can help and train other employees. I have a determination to always strive to be more efficient.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I follow my two kids around the state watching them play volleyball, soccer, and wrestling.
What is one recommendation you could make to help Colas USA operate better?
Streamlined processes. I think it would be beneficial to have more technology to get information from the field to the office. I know this is an area we are working in, but it is the biggest area of improvement I see we have.
